BIO-SWALES
Bio-swales are strips of vegetated areas that slow down and collect rainwater runoff, allowing it to infiltrate the soil, in addition to filtering pollutants. Bio-swales are important for climate change adaptation given the increase in storm frequency and scale that can result in polluted water overflow.
Primary Function
Collects and conveys storm water
Removes diffuse pollution from runoff with special plants
Improves groundwater infiltration (optional)
Added Benefits
Increased biodiversity
Reduces overheating (in comparison to paved areas)
Carbon sequestration
Improved urban quality
Communicates urban water dynamics
